Colic Symptoms, Signs and Treatment
14/12/08
Most individuals are not surprised anymore when it occurs since colic is so normal among babies. A recent mom already anxious from interruptions to her own sleep, eating, and self-care routines can easily feel overpowered and afraid when her otherwise complacent baby cries uncontrollably and is immune to any soothing attempts. It is generally manifested at about two to three weeks of age but it becomes more prominent during the first two months, subsiding at three months and ending completely at about three-and-a-half to four months of age. Although it might seem so from the way babies would cry and scream at the top of their lungs colic is actually not so serious. In fact, it can be so normal that moms and dads may experience an episode on a daily basis and after the first occurrence, parents normally learn to handle succeeding ones with ease. Physicians have not been able to say just what induces intestinal colic until now.

Colic, to those who are not familiar with the problem, is a belly ache that occurs after eating and because of the continuous pain, babies cry for hours and hours until the colic is relieved. At times the babies can cry anywhere from one hour to four hours, it all depends on how high the pain is a lot of times the cheeks will get red from becoming so tired or maybe because of the amount of pain. If intestinal colic is present, the belly of the baby can become dilated and one leg may bend while the other extends straight out. The feet will become cold and the hands clenched tight because of the pain which is actually a common reaction for individuals whose stomachs pain them. The severity of the occurrence of intestinal colic can be caused by other elements. Below are a few of them so read on so that you can avert these components and prevent your baby from further suffering.
Overfeeding can only exacerbate the situations when you have a colicky baby in your arms so make sure that your baby is suffering from hunger and not intestinal colic before you feed him again. Foods with a lot of sugar or juice will produce more wind in the belly and aggravate the colic. Intestinal allergic reaction - this may also be a cause of intestinal colic so moms and dads need to know what their children are allergic to. It may be from something that the mother has ingested directly something they have given to the infant on through the milk when feeding. Intestinal colic can be affected by intense emotions such as anger, fear, anxiety, or exhilaration, and displaying these feelings around a colicky baby will only exacerbate the infant’s pain.
The best way that you can help your baby is to be ready, by learning as much as practicable before an episode of colic occurs. Non-stop crying can be a result of a host of other things so it is essential that you also keep your eyes open so that you will know what just ails your baby. Since there is no known reason, there is no known cure, so all that can be done is to make it as comfortable and as painless as possible.
